Westchester Attorneys

Named after the city of Chester in Great Britain, Westchester County is a 500 square mile county in New York with a population of nearly 950,000. This suburban county was the first of its kind to develop, with middle-class communities starting as early as the 19th century. The area has a vast amount of history, with the earliest settlers being the Dutch West India Company in the 1620s. In the 1660s, the English gained control and set up manors to govern the area. By the time of the War for Independence, it was the largest and richest county in New York.

Westchester County is located on the southeastern portion of the state, with Long Island to the east and New York City to the west. The county is made up of 6 counties, 19 towns, and 20 villages, and the entire area is considered a suburb of NYC. The county has 42 local police agencies rather than one overall police department, but these agencies work with each other and will use the NYPD or state police when needed.

According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, Westchester County has the eighth highest per capita income in the country at $52,952. The median income for an individual is $67,555 and for a family of four it is $96,500. Approximately 8.7% of the population in Westchester County lives below the poverty line. As to demographics, the population in the area is made up to 57.4% White, 21.8% Hispanic, 15.6% African American, and 5.4% Asian. The languages spoken are 21.8% English, 14.4% Spanish, 3.5% Italian, and 1.1% of both Portuguese and French.

Westchester Criminal Defense Attorney

Although the crime rate in Westchester County is lower than other areas of New York, it still has seen its share of tragedies. In October of last year, a triple homicide-suicide rocked the community. A lawyer, S.F., beat his wife to death and then shot his two young children, aged eight and ten, with a Remington shotgun. After tucking his children into bed, he went to the basement and shot himself in the head. This incident came just days before the couple was set to begin their divorce trial. Friends and family were not shocked that an incident occurred, but never imagined it would be this brutal. S.F. had been the victim of emotional abuse by his wife and had recently stopped taking his depression medication. Adding to his difficulties was the fact that he had stopped working and could not provide for his family. Even though he had been acting irrationally, no one expected this.
