Formed in 1960, the police department has been responsible for five of the ten towns in Suffolk County. Before that, law enforcement was the responsibility of each individual town and village with help from the state police. As the crime rates increased, however, the need for a county department became apparent. Not all of the towns decided to use the new police force and maintained control of their own department and this remains true to this day. They still rely on the Suffolk County police for specialized services as they have their own Detective Bureau, Communications Bureau, and academy to train new officers. Today, there are 2,500 officers in the department, making it one of the largest in the whole country.
Although Suffolk County is a suburban, wealthy community, it has seen its share of criminal activities. Perhaps the most famous was the Amityville Horror case which took place in 1974. The DeFeo family had lived in their home on Ocean Avenue since 1965. On November 13, 1974, the son, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. killed his parents and four younger siblings, ages 18, 13, 12, and 9. He claimed that he had heard their voices plotting against him and had killed them out of self-defense. He was found guilty of six counts of second-degree murder and is still serving his sentences in Green Haven Correctional Facility. It still remains unclear as to how he carried out the murders and what his motive was. The mystery surrounding this case and the public's interest in it has been perpetuated from the books, films, and documentaries which were made about what happened.
